FRENCH TAXES.
SENATE ADOPTS PROPOSALS. PARIS, April 4. The French Senate by 232 to 12 adopted the Government’s tax proposals in a slightly amended form, notably omitting the clauses relating to the petroleum and sugar monopolies. It also adopted an increase in Customs duties but decided, however, to exempt newsprint only. Among the new taxes voted by the Chamber is one on restaurant bills calculated to discourage gluttony. Bills below 20 francs will not be taxed, but for 20 francs and upwards stamp duty will be imposed, roughly, one centime for every franc to 100 francs, when the penalty will become more severe.—A. and N.Z. cable.
