JUVENILE CRIME.

DECREASE IN UNITED STATES

NO GROUNDS FOR SCARE,

WASHINGTON, April 5. ( . Challenging tho contention that there are any roul ground for a youthful scrimo wave scare in tho United States, the Federal Children’s Bureau has issued a statement that available figures indicate a reduction rather than an increase in juvenile delinquency rates during the past decade. The bureau declares that there was no significant increase in tho number of children committed to gaol for grave offences (homicide, robbery and burglary), between 1910 and 1923, and recommends a sane, thoughtful consideration of this problem rather than newspaper headlines. Fourteen cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orealu, Richmond, St. Louis, Seattle and Washington, provided statistics, showing decreased delinquency in nine of them. Increased rates were found only in four cities, namely Detroit, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Seattle. The immediate post-war years showed slight increases. New York especially shows a marked decrease.- —A. and N.Z, cablo.
