THE KAWARAU DAM.
LAKE aY LOW LEVEL,
OPPORTUNITY BEING SEIZED
DUNEDIN, April 3. Reports regarding work at the Kawarau dam aro very satisfactory. The lake has dropped to 4ft Din on the gauge, greatly assisting the engineer and his staff. The two divers who have been working at the site of No. 10 pier left about a fortnight ago after bringing their operations to a successful issue. The base has since been pumped dry, and a 3in pump is holding all soakage. Over 150 cubic yards of concrete has already been poured into the foundation of the pier and the sills on either side, and is expected that both the pier and sills would bo up to the sill level shortly. The carpenters are working 10 and 12 hours a day, in order to push this work ahead, and it is hoped to have the pier high enough to place in the gates and dispose of the diversion dam in about a fortnight. Tile opportunity of the lake having dropped is being taken to make a start with the diversion dam, in the vicinity of the site of piers Nos. 0 and 7, the last two of the 11. Extra hands have been taken on and it is expected that more will be set to work very soon. At tho present time about 55 men aro engaged.
