OUT FOR LIFE. EIGHT U.S.A. TURF MEN. LEXINGTON (Kentucky), March 22. Four leading jockeys, threo owners, and ono trainer have been ruled off for life. It is the most drastic and sensational punishment ever meted out by Die Kentucky Racing Commission, and tho action was taken after long investigation of “fixed” races last season. Tho method of crookedness was invariably the same,. The riders were paid when they pulled their mounts, allowing others to win. MORE SCANDAL. NEW YORK. March 24. Kentucky’s great racing scandal, as a result of which four jockeys, three owners, and a trainer wore disqualified for life, has started new investigations on tho tracks of other States, and new sensations are expected, with a dozen more jockeys and owners ruled off. Betting commissioners in Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia claim that they liavo been swindled out of millions in tho last five years. These big poolroom owners knew something was wrong, hired detectives, and then forced the racing authorities to take action. One turf commissioner said: “More than a year ago I ascertained that certain jockeys were fixing races. I handled wagers laid by jockeys themselves, and knew something must be wrong. Horses that never figured in the betting wero beating favourites. YVhen a race is run on its merits tho fiercentago is always in favour of tho ayer and against tho player.” PAT DONOGHUE’S WIN. HOW HE BEAT THE FAVOURITE. LONDON, March 24. King of Clubs, the winner of the Lincolnshire Handicap to-day, was ridden by Pat Donoghue, the diminutive son of the famous jockey Steve Donoghue. The tiny lad’s mount was a 100 to ono chance, and amid tense excitement he defeated the 9 to 2 favourite Zionist by a head, although the Aga Khan’s horse was ridden by the smart apprentice Smirke. There were 26 runners, and Vesington Star, who started at 25 to 1, was a length away third. Steve Donoghue rode Augeia, a 33 to 1 chance, who finished last. Sir Charles Hyde’s Dignity, ridden by Frank Dempsey, went out at 20 to 1 and finished seventh. King of Clubs, as his weight and the odds against him indicated, had been a poor performer. He is a six year-old, who at four years won three sprint races, and last season did not improve on this form. Zionist, who had been favourite for some time, has added to the Aga Ivhan’s long list of seconds in important races. Chaucer, sire of Lavendo, winner of tho Caulfield Cup, and of Bowman and grandsire of The Night Patrol, died in England in February. He was 26 years old. A son of St. Simon, he won £5663 in stakes, capturing the Liverpool Cup (twice) and the Gimcrack Stakes. His best son was Steadfast, winner of £26,363 in stakes and siro"of The Night Patrol and other good performers. Chaucer was by St. Simon, from Canterbury Pilgrim, by Tristan, lip to the end of last year ho had sired 178 winners in England, of 309 races, and £151,837 in stakes. Chauqer was tho sire of the imported horse Arrowsmith, a good winner on the New Zealand turf. TROTTING THE HAYVEItA MEETING. PETERYVAH IVINS WAIMATE HANDICAP. Per Press Association.
