COAL CRISIS.

STATEMENT BY OFFICIAL.

LONDON, April 3.

Tho Miners’ Federation secretary, Mr A. J. Cook, in a speech at Pontefract, said: “It is clear that the coal owners are using the opportunity to declare war against the mining community. I say most plainly and calmly that a serious crisis is involved. The owners’ proposals are worse than those of last July. We will meet the council of the Trades Union Congress on Thursday. There is no reason to doubt that they will stand by us as they did in July, when wo beat back all opposing forces. Tho crisis is not oven national, it is international.”—A. and N.Z. cable.
