GOLF TOURNAMENT.

PLAY IN MAJOR EVENTS. FIRST ROUND DECIDED. Play in tho Easter tournament of the Manawatu Golf Club was continued this morning at the Hokowhitu links under good weather conditions. The initial rounds of tho championship and the Hokowhitu Handicap were decided early this afternoon. A. E. Ekstedt, who went round in 72 in the first half of the qualifying 36 holes on Saturday morning, retained his good form in tho first round of tho championship to-day, defeating F. Hutchison (Matamata), seven up and five to play. Ekstedt’s card, as completed over the 18 holes for tho sake of the bogey handicap, read:— Out: Z, 4,4, 4,3, 5,4, 3, 6—38. In: 4,4, 4,3, 4,5, 4,5, 5—38. Total 76.

At no less than seven holes was the local man up on tho “colonel” and he finished three better than standard for the eighteen holes. For holes_ 5 to 9, inclusive, the pair divided the honours, but Ekstedt was three up at the turn and never looked like being checked.

Louis Seifert is always a player to be reckoned with, and was the holder of the club championship in 19131914. This morning ho beat A. E. Lawry, of Napier, three up and two to play, completing tho 18 holes in the bogey figure—79. Louis Seifert, junr., the boy exponent, beat Bennett in the Hokowhitu Handicap (first round) at the nineteenth. If he weathers another round or so of such an event at tho ago of 12 his performances will attract even more attention.

In connection with the triple tie for fifteenth and sixteenth places in the qualifying round of the Hokowhitu Handicap D. AV. Strang retired, leaving H. A. Boddington and C. Marchbanks in the competition.

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY.

Tho first round of the championship resulted : Ekstedt beat F. Hutchison 7 and 5. MacMillan beat Rapley 3 and 1. L. Seifert beat Lawry 3 and 2. George beat Druco 3 and 1. Davies beat Harrison 1 up. H. Hutchison beat E. G. Sim 2 up. Fitzherbert beat Harding 6 and 5. Saunders beat Moore 5 and 4. HOKOAVHITU HANDICAP. The .first round of the Hokowhitu Handicap resulted : AV. Seifert (5) beat Armstrong (5) 4 and 3. ....

P. Daniell (6) beat Cumberworth (4) 1 up. Cave (8) beat Giblin (9) 3 and 2. Retemeyer (8) beat Young (3) 1 up. Marchbanks (9) beat H. Riddell (5) 6 and 5.

L. Seifert, junr. (9) beat Bennett (9) at tho nineteenth. Boddington (7) beat Cunningham (9) 2 and 1. C. Riddell (11) beat Pryde (5) 3 up and 2 to play. BOGEY HANDICAP. This morning’s bogey handicap was won by C. Marchbanxs (9) with 0 up.
