EARTHQUAKE SHOCK.
FELT IN CHRISTCHURCH.
At 6.11 o’clock on AVednesday morning an earthquake shock was felt in Christchurch. It seemed as though the earth, or that part of it round about Christchurch, were giving itself a slightly impatient shrug, like a big dog shaking off a playful kitten. The authorities at the Magnetic Observatory state that the earthquake lasted for only 10 to 15 seconds, about a quarter of a minute. The amplitude on the seismograph was very small when they examined it, being only half a millimetre.
It was what is called a “near shock”; that is, its origin was somewhere in the vicinity of Christchurch, probably toward the north. Asked if it were the tail-end of a big earthquake some distance away, the obesrvatory folk said “No.” They explained that the amplitude would have been of much longer duration if a violent earthquake had taken place many miles away.
