LIQUOR QUESTION.
INQUIRY IN AMERICA,
HUNDREDS OF WITNESSES.
Received April 5, 11.35 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 4. The Senate sub-committeo of the judiciary will open trf-morrow public Hearings lasting a fortnight upon six measures for the repeal or modification of the Y'olstead Law, promising to rival the most famous of Congressional investigations. Both the “Urys” and tho “wets” are marshalling their lorces, with Senators Bruce anu Edge conducting a campaign for the latter and the anti-saloon league for the rormer.
There are hundreds of witnesses, including many important governmental heuds. These will testify on three questions which are: The possibility of enforcement, social effects and public sentiment concerning prohibition and various anti-prohibition measures pending which asic for modilication of tho Volstead Law, permitting tho sale of beers and wines, tlie introduction of the Canadian system of sales of alcohol and liquors under Government agencies in limited quantities, and a national referendum. It is interesting to lioto in tho last-named connection that the New York State legislature is likely to authorise. a State referendum upon prohibition for November 2.
