EASTER SERVICES

OBSERVANCE OF GOOD FRIDAY. ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH. There was a splendid observance ol Good Friday in All Saints’ Church. Litany and reading were taken by Rov. G. W. Dent at 8 a.m. The chief service of the day, Alatins, ante-Com-munion and sermon, was taken by ltev. H. Kenney. The three hours’ devotion, when Yen. Archdeacon Creed Meredith, Vicar of Wanganui, officiated, was a great spiritual help, and the addresses on the seven words of the Cross were greatly appreciated by a largo congregation. In the evening a large congregation assembled to hear the choir render the new setting of the “Passion of Our Lord,” composed by Dr Wood, of Cambridge University. This setting is quite new. and it may be of interest to know that the composer was the organist of the college chapel of the present vicar when he was at Cambridge. The chief parts were taken by Rev. F. M. Kempihorne, Mr Bryden and Mr Whitehorn. It was beautifully sung and very impressive, and Mr J. Holmes Runnicles is to be congratulated on his training of the choir. Services were taken at Linton and Longburn by Rev. G. W. Dent, at Kahuterawa by. Rev. H. Kenney, and at Kairanga by the vicar. The vicar took the three horn's’ devotion at the parish church at Wanganui.

METHODIST CHURCHES. Special combined services were held at the two Methodist churches yesterday, tho Rev. John Oliver conducting tho eight o’clock service, which was hold at Cubi Street, tho Rev. M. A. Rugby-Pratt the 11 o’clock service at St. Paul’s and the Rev. Harold T. Peat the evening service at Cuba Street, both churches being decorated for the occasion. At tho forenoon service the Rev. Rugby Pratt, in tho courso of his address, stressed the importance and sacredness of the day, which ho propounded under three headings as under: “A Memorial ol Redemptive Love,” ‘‘The Remission of Vital Fellowship” and “A Challenge to Consecration.” In the evening, the Rev. Peat took as his text “Behold tho Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of tho World.” In the course of his remarks the minister said that primarily these words were uttered by John tho Baptist as ho fulfilled his sacred ofliee as herald ot the Messiah. He asked tho congregation to content plate the scene portrayed in them in relation to that tragic scene enacted upon Calvary. Tho sacrificial work of Jesus found its culminating point upon the heights of Calvary —there they crucified Him. As we gaze upon Him, who hangs upon the Cross, our hearts toll us that He has no parallel in the human race. Alone, fearless and in perfect innocence, He tasted death for every man. Voluntarily, Ho laid down His life that men might live. Ho was the Lamb of God provided for the extreme emergency of tho soul’s deepest needs, a sacrifice that satisfied the worn and heavyladen.

At each service the offertrics wore devoted to the hinds of the Methodist Womens’ Mission.
