EGG ENQUIRY.
REPORT OF COMMISSION.
SOUTH AFRICAN COMPANY’S REPLY.
Received April 3, 11.50 a.m. CAPETOWN, April 2. The Imperial Cool Store and Shipping Company, on March 31, issued a preliminary statement in reply to tho findings of the Egg Commission, declaring that it was not correct to state that the company refused to give assistance. The company acted on legal advice in view of tho claims for damages pending against it, and offered to reply to the questionnaire, but this did not suit the purpose of tho commission. The company thereupon offered a statement concerning the handling and export of eggs during tho season, which the commission received and quoted throughout its report without a word showing that it had actually been supnlicd by the Imperial Company, ancl no further information was requested by tho commission. The statement completely justified the company’s assertion that it was not responsible for the taint in eggs, and showed that while eggs were being examined and passed for export the Government egg inspectors and staff were in the company’s cool chambers daily, and at no times suggested the presence of any taint or foreign smell. — A. and N.Z. cable.
A Government commission appointed to inquire into the cause of the tainting of eggs exported from South Africa involving a loss of £BO,OOO, has issued a startling indictment of the Imperial Cold Store and Shipping Company as mainly responsible. It states that' the board of the company refused to allow certain of its officers to give evidence.
