FERGUSON STREET.
ORIGIN OF NAME. THAT OF FORMER GOVERNORGENERAL. The supposition of the GovernorGeneral expressed by him at the civic welcome yesterday, that Ferguson street in Palmerston North was named after his father, is endorsed by Cr R. Edwards. To a “Standard” representative this morning Cr Edwards stated that his father, who was for some years a member of the old highways board (now the Ivairanga County Council) had informed him that Ferguson street was named after a Governor of that name, the father of Si- Charles, the present occupant of the office. A great many people, sail Cr Edwards, were under the misapprehension that the street in question was named after an ex-Mayor of the town (Mr Alex. Ferguson), this belief-'being expressed at the time when tlv'jMayoral chain, presented by former c&ef magistrates of the municipality, vas handed over to the present Mayor by Mr Ferguson. That gentleman, Jiowever, had stated that the street Was not named after him. but after Governor Fergusson. THE ORIGINAL BOROCGH. In explaining the position Cr Edwards produced an original plan of the borough, the age of which is indicated when it is pointed oui that, at that time, the municipality extended only 10 chains up Rangitufi street from the present Bank of Newt Zea-
land, 46 chains towards the ry V along Fitzherbert street, towards the \Foxton line as far as 'the 16 Kawau stream, and 95 chains from tie Sqiiare in the direction of Napier load.! A steam sawmill in what is now ,tho prosperous suburb of Terrace End is indicated on the plan, as also isja fringe of bush and some swamp land; since reclaimed. / 1
