CARDINAL DEAD.
CHAMPION OF BELGIUM. BRUSSELS, Jan. 22. The death lias occurred of Cardinal Mercier, Archbishop of Malines. Realising that the end was approaching, ho summoned his servants and joined, them in the prayers for tho dying.—A. and N.Z. cable.
LONDON, Jan. 24. Tho Observer says that Cardinal Mercier's name will live in history as the undaunted champion of Belgian rights against tho oppression and outrage of German invasion.—A. and N.Z. cable.
WEEPINGAND PRAYING CROWDS Received January 25, 10.15 a.m. BRUSSELS, Jan. 23. Weeping and praying crowds surrounded Cardinal Mercier’s house during his last hours. Cardinal Mercier received the Last Sacraments and then said: “Now I am ready to die in peace.”—A. and N.Z. cable.
