MENTAL DEFECTIVES
ALARMING INCREASE. SEGREGATION ADVOCATED.. (By " Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 22, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 21. Replying to a letter published in the Times by eminent physicians and surgeons, who drew attention to the alarming increase in mental defectives, which disease was mainly hereditary, and advocated legislation to prevent defectives propagating, other eminent doctors, representing tlte Mental Welfare Association, assert that sterilisation would not touch the Eroblem, because most defectives are orn of sound parents, and, further, sterilisation would produce a serious social evil, especially through tho victimisation of defective women and girls. They conclude that segregation is tho only remedy that will safeguard both the defectives and tho community.—Times.
