STRIKE ECHO

PAPAROA’S EVENTFUL TRfP. LONDON, Jan. 10. The steamer Paparoa arrived in the Thames after a voyage from Australia which occupied two months, instead of 48 days. Tho Paparoa left Townsville with a scratch crew consisting of several young farmers and a number of Italians, who had finished sugar-cut-ting, but the crew was still 24 men short. The only original member of the crew was tho boatswain. The vessel travelled via Batavia, and encountered bad weather. One after another tho crew went down with seasickness, which involved heavy work for the officers. Frequently half of tho crow was confined to their bunks. The engineers assisted in stoking and greasing. Tho farmers behaved gallantly in the stokehold. Officers painted tho ship, while the chief steward acted as butcher and cook.
