PIPE BAND DETAINED.
PASSPORTS AGAIN WITHHELD. BOND REQUIRED IN CANADA. AUCKLAND Jan. 20. Although it was thougnt that all formalities had been complied with, passports were again refused yesterday to the members of the Australian Ladies’ Pipe Band, and they were unable to leave for Vancouver by the Niagara. The band comprises twenty girls, the majority being under tho age pf twenty-one. Before leaving Australia each junior member obtained the consent of her parents to embark on tho tour. Documents relating to this authority had not reached New Zealand when the first application for passports was made some weeks ago, and this resulted in a hitch.
The papers have since arrived, but the Department of Internal Affairs still withheld the permits as it was stated there was some formality yet to be complied with. It is stated a bond of £4OO is required before the band can land in Canada.
