MANAWATU CLUB. EVENING MEETING. Tho Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club conducted its first evening meeting for tlie season, at the Sponsground yesterday, lour events constituting tho programme. The attendance, Llirougn lack of publicity, was not large, only about dU or 4U spectators being present. The events were well contested, a total of just under HU competitors taking part, but, unfortunately, no times were taken. However, good promise was shown by several of tiie competitors, and, witli recent acquisitions to its ranks —11. W. Shackleton and N. C. Harvey (Christchurch) and S. A. Oxenham i,tho well-known Woodvillo middle-dis-tance runner) —the club should, athletically, bo on a much stronger footing later in the season. The starting was in the capable hands of Mr E. W. Aisher, wfiiie the juuges were Messrs T. Stubbs, J. L. C. Merton and J. Cooksley. The four events resulted as'Tollow:

Half-mile cycle: C. Casey (00yds) 1, E. Powell (46yds) 2, A. J. Tate (4o yds) 3. Eive starters. Won by three yards, with a similar distance between second and third.

Hall-mile fiat: L. J. Mullins (40 yds) 1, J. Craig (65yds) 2, It. W. Shackleton (60yds) 3. Seven starters. Oxenham, tho back marker, olf 20 yards, still tailed the field at the end of the first lap, but was well up with 220 yards to go, at this stage lying third. Entering the home straight, Craig led Mullins by a small margin, but was passed 30 yards from the tape, Mullins finishing well and winning by three yards. In the meantime Oxenham, who was obviously not in condition, had to give way to Shackleton, who finished fifteen yards behind Oraig and five in front of the virtual scratch man. 100 yards: It. Walker (6yds) 1, L. J. Mullins (6yds) 2 J A. Woston (4 yds) 3. Nine starters. A fine finish, a foot covering tho placed men. M. Strange, the back-marker, appeared to have the race won at the . half-dis-tance, but over the last 50 yards failed to sustain his opening burst of speed, although he appeared to finish in a place. High jump: N. C. Harvey (2ins) sft 2ins 1, S. Grinstead (3ins) and M. Strange (scr) 6ft equal, 3. Five competitors. Strange failed in an attempt to clear sft 3ins.
