LATE JOHN LEWIS.
PILLAR OF ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. LONDON, Jan. 13. The death is announced of Mr John Lewis, of the English Football Association, whom the newspapers describe as tho foundation-stone of British Soccer. He entered tho game when tho laws were crude and unsatisfactory, and left a perfect code. He was a member of tho Association’s Council for 30 years, and was one of England’s greatest referees. Ho founded tho Blackburn Rovers Club. Mr Lowis was rather proud of being a bigot on tho subject of prohibition.
Mr Lewis was a pillar of the English Football Association for many years, and in his younger days was regarded as the finest referee in all Britain. He was manager of the English team which visited Australia last season, and recently caused quite a storm by his comments on the English cricket team which was also in Australia last year. Mr Lewis was a teetotaller, and had decided opinions upon tho question of drink—particularly where athletes were concerned.
