DIGGERS WHO FELL IN FRANCE. £IOO,OOO MEMORIAL. MELBOURNE, Jan. 9. Melbourne architects are submitting designs for an Australian monument to be erected at Villiers Bretonneux, in France, to the memory of our soldiers who died in Franco. The secretary of the Royal Victorian Institute of architects (Mr W. M. Campbell) stated to-day that the competition had created much interest in Melbourne. It is proposocr to spend £IOO,OOO upon the memorial. The prizes premiums have been allotted as follow: First and second designs £250 each, third design £l5O. The next best seven designs will be allotted £IOO each. The material for the monument must be wrought in Australia, under the supervision of the selected architect. Designs must bo ready before April 30 this year, and will bo dealt with, first of all, by a board of adjudicators. The final adjudication will be made by an architect to be nominated by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
