YESTERDAY’S AIEETING

The monthly meeting of tho Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday afternoon at Wanganui, Air W. A. Collins There were also present Alessrs A. Fraser, E. T. Hemmingway, W. W. Hedges, H. AlcIntyre, J. Aitken, W. Adams, W. F. Durward and W. R. Birnie. The architect’s report stated that during the past month the school, residence and outbuildings at Glen Oroua' had received two coats of paint. The iron fence at tho Oroua Downs School had also received two coats of paint. During the ensuing month the septic tank system is to be installed at the Apiti School’. The Taikorea School Committee was granted permission to erect a war memorial in the 6chodl grounds.

It was decided to make further representations to the department for a grant towards putting down a floor in the "West End quadrangle. The report of Mr Birnie, relative to the purchase of the extra ground for the school, was deferred until the next meeting. The department notified that it had sanctioned a grant of £3O towards the purchase of additional ground for the Lytton Street School, Feilding. The department wrote stating that it recognised the necessity for romodelling the Ashhurst School and that £IOO will bo made available in the near future to carry out portion of the work, though additional funds will not be available till March 31. Tho board accepted the resignations of G. Banks, assistant teacher at Central School, and R. D. Mcßae, head teacher at Kiwitea School. A letter was received from the department regarding tho proposed conveyance of children from Siberia road to Ashhurst School and from Cloverlea settlement to Central School,. the department declining to make a special grant for this purpose. In regard to tho Cloverlea settlement, tho department stated that the distance from tho nearest point to tho Central School was 174 chains, and from tho middle of the settlement 250 chains.

Mr Durward said that tho case was one where something should bo done. Tho closest point might not bo more .than two and a-half miles, but the road used by the children on the way to school was a main stock route and carried a tremendous amount of motor traffic. It was not safe to ask children to travel in some instances three miles to school.

Tho board agreed further to press tho claim for a special grant. No action was taken regarding the conveyance of children from the Siberia road district.
