FEILDING NEWS

CRICKET MATCHES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Tlio A and B grade cricket competitions wero resumed on Saturday in line weather, after an interval of five weeks. On No. 1 wicket at Ivowhai Park Feilding met Public Service and. at tho closo of play, the match was in an interesting position. Foilding, who wero without tho services of Elliott, Ilill and Carter, had rather a weak team but, thanks to Waldin (57) and Salmond (24). wero ablo to compile 142, _ batting one man short Waldin started in his usual quiet fashion but, gaining confidence, lie quickly got into tho twenties and thereafter scored with many well-placed boundary shots, including ono perfect six. It was a pity that Salmond foil a victim to McDonald when ho was only 24. The doctor was batting confidently, placing tho ball between the fieldsmen with forceful strokes. When in form there was no more stylish batsman in tlio district than tho genial doctor. McDonald (fivo for 55) and Ramsay (three for 0) wero tho best bowlers for Public Service. Teague and llolFmeistcr opened tho first innings for Public Service, tlio latter being caught beford ho had scored. Teague and McDonald then became associated and by vigorous batting put on 80 before they wero separated. When stumps wero drawn at 6 o’clock Public Service had lost six wickets for 108.

On tho adjoining wicket High School met Cheltenham whom they defeated in tho first innings. As matters stand, now it looks as though the position will bo reversed in this match. High School commenced first and could only muster 63, Dcwe (16) boing tho only batsman to reach double figures. 11. G. Ilaro (six for 21) and Power (tlireo for 5) bowled well for Cheltenham. Cheltenham commenced their first innings after tho toa adjournment and put on 216 before they wero dismissed. Daniels (36). E. M. Hare (21), Miller (80) and 11. G. Hare (38) boing the chief scorers. It is particularly pleasing lo record the success of Miller who has batted consist, cntly in all matches this season, his score on Saturday boing his highest to date. Ho played a clashing innings which included 14 fours and two sixes. Telford (fivo for 30) was tho best bowler for High School. With less than an hour to play High School commenced their second innings and when stumps wero drawn had lost two wickets for 43 (Dowe not out 11, Manson not out 22).
