CARRIAGE OF MAILS.
DR. THACKER’S COMPLAINT. Per Press Association. <=>»,» TSTCHURCH, Dec. 30. Dr. Thacker has repine >- - \ q> Markman repeating his (Dr. Thacker's) declarations that mails to England are needlessly slow. He expresses astonishment that a responsible public servant should make such a mistake as to declare that the air mail crossed the United States in 36 hours. The actual time, Dr. Thacker declares, is 48 hours. Trans-Pacific mail steamers might, he says, be speeded up to make the journey 48 hours faster. _ They would connect with the air mail and with the fast Atlantic steamers which are available, now giving a 22 days’ service to London for those ready to pay the express charge for urgent letters. Dr. Thacker repeats his former statement that the actual time taken by the mails in transit is much more hail the official figures show, and he instances letters posted by himself in London on November 8 to catch tho Vancouver mail, which, he declares, took 42 days to reach Christchurch.
