DUNEDIN MEETING CONCLUDES. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 30. The sports meeting of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union concluded to-day in fine weather, though light showers fell towards the end of the afternoon. Interest centred in the winning of the Sheffield Handicap. The race was run in four heats, two semi-finals and one final. McLennan, on two yar,ds won his heat in 12 3-5 sec arid the semi-final in 12 4-6 sec. Hansen (Oamaru), who was on the 15 yards mark, made fult~ttse-o£_his_han-dicap in the final, and McLennan did not get to him till about ten yards from the tape. Both men appeared to breast the tape together, and the judge gave the verdict to Hansen. Pearson (Hokitika) was ' third and Grafton (Christchurch) fourth. McLennan won the 200 yards championship from E. Cook (Invercargill) and J. Harris (Oamaru) in 22 3-ssec. These were the only starters. Other results were:

880 yards championship: Newlands (Inchholme) 1, Escreet (Norsewood) 2, Bone (Invercargill) 3. Four others started. "Won by six yards. Time, 2min 4sec.

Half-mile cycling championship, final : Mackie 1, M. J. Fitzgerald 2, O’Shea 3. A protest entered by O’Shea against Fitzgerald for carrying him out at the bend into the straight was upheld, and Fitzgerald was severely cautioned. It was decided to re-run the race later in the day, and in the run-off only Wells and O’Shea started. Wells won by inches. Time, lmin 19 3-ssec.

One and a-half-mile cycle handicap: E. Fitzgerald 1, M. Mackie 2, Palmer 3. Time, 3min 34sec. J. F. Wells won the two-mile championship from O’Shea and Mackie. Mackie ran into a pocket entering the straight and could not get clear. He entered a jjrotest against O’Shea for crossing, but the protest was dismissed. _. H. AV. Birch (180yds) and E. Fitzgerald (150yds) paced each other right away from the field in the three-mile handicap and made a dead-heat of it. They were fined £1 each by the referee for not riding the race out.

ATHLETIC UNION

DUNEDIN CONFERENCE. DUNEDIN, Dec. 30. Continuing its sitting to-day, the annual conference of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union decided that tho 1927 running, cycling and shield championships should be held at Gisborne on January 1 and 2, and the next conference at Taumarunui. Tho executive recommendation that quarter-mile and ten-mile events bo added to tho New Zealand championships was agreed to by tho conference, as was also the new rule to the effect that the inside rider in a cycling race must hold tho polo lino, and that a rider a length ahead of another competitor must ride, inside Unless otherwise instructed by the referee. The following new, rules for tug-of-war contests were adopted: (1) That starts be made uniform, tho pin (not a tapered one) to be released on the call of three; (2) that teams have » right to use their captain as an emergency; (3) that heavy-weight contests bo not limited in weight; (4) that tho rope bo held steady for a period at the termination of the pull; (5) that side stops be 18 inches from tho centre mark, and that tho team going over the side-mark be disqualified ; (6) that the timo limit be five minutes. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr A. J. Hansen (Manaia); vice-presidents, Messrs A. A. Georgo (Hawke’s Bay), D. F. McKay (Dunedin) and A. J. Fisher (Blenheim); secretary, Mr J. Kennedy (Geraldine): committee, Messrs J ; Collingwood (Wanganui), AV. J. AValter (Christchurch), A. P. Scobie (Balfour), 11. P. Meek (Oamaru), G. E. Perkins (Greymouth) and D. Church (Gisborne).
