NEW ZEALAND UNION CONFERENCE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 29. At the nineteenth annual conference of tho New Zealand. Athletic and Cycling Union, held this morning, the following doiegutes were present: Messrs J. A. Hansen (president), A. Melville (Taranaki), J. Collingwood (Wanganui), C. Church, T. G. Lawless (JPovcrty Bay), A. J. Fisher (Blenheim), A. P. Scopie, J. Qualter (Southland), J. Kennedy, J. Mcilroy, F. E. Soutli (South Canterbury), T. Read, It. B. Meek, J. Matliieson, J. D. Forbes (Otago), T. Ryan .(West Coast), W. J. Walter, P. C. Lucas (North Canterbury), A. A. George (Hawke’s Bay). Mr J. S. Douglas, in extending a welcome to the visiting delegates on behalf of the city, apologised for the absence of the Mayor and DeputyMayor. Mr B. S. Irwin (president of the local club) also extended a welcome to the delegates. In opening the conference the presi-

There vas no burning question to be discussed. The adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet was moved by the president. The report stated, intei aim, that the balance-sheet showed a healthy-financial position- I his was satisfactory, considering that the registrations and affiliations were less than last year, which was acocunted for by the various restrictions. Ims season’s returns were very creditable under the circumstances, There weie 185 affiliated clubs and 2277 registered competitors under their control. It was decided that the maximum entry lees be 5 per cent, of the first prize money for all events. The following remit concerning wrestling’ (catch as catch can) was moved: "(1) Stranglehold, full Nelson and breaking of fingers and toes barred; (2) shoulders to be pinned on ground two seconds (pin fall); (3) no grease or any foreign matter to be used on any part of the body.” The remit was adopted. A great number of minor alterations to the rules were carried.

PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONS. MEETING AT DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Dec. 29. The first day of the New r Zealand professional championship meeting was field oil tho Caledonian Ground to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, and some fine running was witnessed. D. McLennan (Canterbury) added to his reputation as one of the fastest runners seen in New Zealand for a long time past. He won a heat in the 100 yards in time given as 9 4-ssec, but this time must be open to doubt, as, running against a fairly brisk breezo, lie won the final even more easily in 10 l-ssec. F. Cook was second and C. W. Pearson third. J. Grafton (14yds) won a heat and tho final of the 220 yards handicap easily, with A. A. Cameron (9iyds) second and W. A. Cubitt (14yds) Time, 23 2-ssec. 880 yards handicap: C. A. Bone (12yds) 1, H. Escreet (20yds) 2, W. Archer (35yds) 3. ' Time given, as 2min 0 4-ssec. The mile championship was run twice, as on the first occasion it was found that the course was a lap short. Fortunately, the three placings in tho first run w r ere the same as in. the second: J. P. Newlands 1, C. A. Bone 2, W. Archer 3. Time, 4min 48 1-5 sec. 440 yards championship: B. Symon 1, A. A. Cameron 2, O. W. Smith 3. W. It. Spillane (scr), 100 ft 3in, won the 161 b hammer throw, with W. Murray, (scr), 95ft 2in, second. A. A. Cameron (scr), 21ft 9in, won the broad jump handicap, with J. Murphy (24in), 20ft llin, second, and T. C. Leo (20in), 20ft 9in, third. E. P. O’Shea and Wells were first and second in the mile cycle championship. In this event Ward, Parker, Henderson and Mackie fell in the last lap, Wells, who was then last, riding through for second place. Time, 2min 33 4-ssec. v Tho three-mile championship was won by O’Shea, with Wells second and Mackie (Christchurch) third. The big cycle handicap of £SO, second prize £lB, third £9 and fourttt” £3, was won by Mackie from the 65 yards mark, with F. C. Ward (165yds) 2, Henderson (65yds) 3 and C. R. Parker (65yds) 4. Ward (95yds) won tho mile handicap, with H. W. Birch (85yds) 2 and R. Parker (35yds) 3.
