ITALY AND MEAT
A LIKELY CUSTOMER. From a review of the frozen meat market in Italy, published by the Rivista del Fredd, it would appear that Italy may become a good customer for antipodean meat. In 1922 importation of frozen meat into Italy for the army, the navy; and the public amounted to 15,000 tons. . In 1924 it was about 130,000 tons. During the last three mouths of 1924 the trade was exceptionally active, owing in a great measure to the removal of the customs duty and partly to the high price of fresh meat. Toward the end of 1923 tho large cities of Italy— Milan, Turin, Bologna, Rome, Venice, Genoa and others —began transforming their slaughterhouses for fresh meat, and opened numerous shops for frozen meat. Operations were extended in 1924, and the demand .for frozen meat increased throughout the year both with tho public and the vendors. It has become sought after by practically all classes of the population, and the prospects for increased consumption are very favourable. Italy has imported frozen meat from New Zealand, Australia, Brazil and Argentina—chiefly the last named. Most of the imported meat was discharged in Genoa.
