RACING CARNIVAL.

The Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting was concluded yesterday when, despite the fact that it was an off day, the majority of the business places having again resumed their activities, there was a very fair attendance of the public. The fields were smaller than on the first and second days and the totalisator returns were naturally lower, but, nevertheless, compared more than favc. ; lbly with the third day of the pre.ious year, the respective figures being £36,202 yesterday and £35,932 for 1924, making a total increase for the meeting of £17,581. Some excellent racing was forthcoming during the day, the victory of Grand Knight in the Liverpool Handicap stamping him as an animal of more than average merit. An exciting finish was forthcoming in the Kawau Handicap, the concluding event of the meeting, the locallyowned Birkie bringing off a surprise victory. The decision did not meet w.itli the approval of a section of the crowd and a mild demonstration was made on the judgo issuing from his box. The mishap to .tlio hurdler, The Emperor, which necessitated his being destroyed, was unfortunate and ended the career of a promising performer over the sticks. Throughout the fixture, the starting was all that could be desired, Mr AV. C. Price displaying considerable patience with some unruly horses. Tho presence of the Palmerston North Municipal Band further enhanced tho enjoyment of the popular holiday meeting. Tho club officials, headed by the secretary, Mr J. M. Johnston, and the totalisator staff all worked with a will, the programme on the respective days being put through with despatch. The fixture will go down as one of tho most successful in the history of tho club. WESTBURY HACK HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; second horse 40 sovs. and third horse 20 sovs. Five furlongs. 3 Mr D. Brown) 7.0.' Pinon was tho only withdrawal, leaving the good field of 16 runners to go to the post, an even betting race finding Bright Knight carrying a shade more money than Minotus and The Bolter. Immediately the tapes were released The Bolter, who had drawn an outside position, .rushed to. the front and with a furlong gone had opened up a substantial lead. Round-

ing the bend into the straight tho field gradually closed up and when straightened out for home, Westbroke set out in pursuit of Tho Bolter, with Lamjjyro and Minotus behind him. Tho leader had, however, too big a break and the Solferino gelding lasted just long enough to win by half a length from Westbroko, with Lampyre three lengths away, a good length ahead of Minotus and Star Chamber. Time, 1.0 2-5. CLANDBOYE HANDICAP,* of 300 sovs.; second horse 60 soys, and third horse 30 sovs. One mile and 110 yards. 3 Mr G. W. In a free betting race, Martulla was installed a firm favourite, tho locallyowned representative carrying almost a third of tho machine. From a fair despatch Pinon, despite a knock at tho jump-out which .almost unseated 'His rider, rushed to tho front and was in the lead from* Zero Hour, Beaumont, Rouex and Martulla as the field went out of the straight. Five furlongs from homo tho three leaders retained their positions, but Son o’ Aline, Highway, Rouex and Martulla had closed up. The field -was well bunched as they straightened out for home, where Pinon shot out with Martulla in hot pursuit, and in a punishing finish held out long enough to gain tho verdict by half a length, with Polyphemus in third place ono and ahalf lengths back. Rouex was fourth. Time, 1.47 2-5. CHRISTMAS HACK WELTER, of 200 sovs.; second horse 40 sovs. and third horse 20 sovs. Seven furlongs. 5 Mrs A. From a ragged dispatch Monday was soon in the van from Tongatotoa, Newbury King, Black Alint and Catcall. At the bend leading into tho straight Tongatotoa had worked to the front with Black Alint and Newbury King next. In the race to tho winning post, Tongatotoa drew out to win by two lengths from the fast-finishing Newbury King, with Catcall a neck away. Black Alint was fourth. Time, 1.28., .... . At the release of the tapes Ilka rushed to the front and opened up a three-lengths break from Birkie, Piquant and Birthmark, but approaching the bottom bend Economist had deposed Birthmark for fourth position. The field had closed up at tho distance, and in a great finish Birkie, Economist, Birthmark and Alaster O’Rorke crossed in line, the lastnamed being wide out. The judge gave first placing to Birkie, with Economist second and Birthmark third, but a considerable difference of' opinion prevailed and a mild demonstration ensued, a section of the crowd maintaining that Economist had won with Alaster O’Rorke second and Birkie third. Time, 1.14 1-5. WINNING JOCKEYS. The most successful jockey at the meeting was B. H. Alorris, who rode six winners for the three days, Trillo being next with four successes, Alackie three, Wilson two and Alcßrearty, Burns, Griffiths, Bowden, Gilmour, AI. AlcCarten, Nixon, Brown and Cotton one each.

THE AUCKLAND AIEETING. THE THORN AVINS SUAIAIER CUP. ELECTRIC HANDICAP TO GLENTRUIN. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 29. Fine weather favoured the Auckland Racing Club for tho Summer Cup day at Ellerslie, when the attendance was satisfactory, and £81,239 was handled by the totalisator for seven races, against £83,237 10s for eight events on the corresponding day last year. For the two days so far a total of £227,208 10s has been handled for fifteen races, against £198,576 10s last summer for the sixteen events. The Summer Cup result came as a bit of a surprise after The Thorn's failure in the Christmas Handicap. Today Air G. AI. Currie’s nominee was always in the picture, and will come into Derby calculations since compassing tho ten furlongs in 2min 6 4-ssec and defeating a dozen of tho handicap class. Broadwood was destroyed after competing in the Summer Cup, it being found that ho had suffered an injury to his pelvis bone when he camo into contact with some other horse during the race. An inquiry was held into the incident, but it was found to be purely accidental. Glentruin just got up in time with ono of her old-time dashes of brilliancy when sho defeated Black Cat by a neck in the Electric Handicap. Tho victory registered by Rapine in the Auckland Cup on Saturday gives another fine'touch to a record already well embellished with doughty feats (writes Phaeton in the Auckland Herald). With an impost (9.8) above weight-for-age it was quite recognised that Rapine was confronted with a severe taski _ Staying and weightcarrying ability was, however, previously entered to the credit of Rapine, and tho manner in which lie answered, the question in the decision of the big race at Ellerslie on Saturday revealed in pointed form that he is carrying his six .years in a manner

that causes him to stand out as a- wellpreserved veteran.

Rapine was bred by Air J. F. Buchanan, of Canterbury, and at the sale of tho Kinloch yearlings at Christchurch in the spring of-1920 he foil to the bid of Mr A. B. Williams at 450gns. Rapine has proved a most profitable speculation for lie has won stakes to tho value of £14,895. At two-years-old Rapine won the Great Northern Champagne Stakes; at three-years-old he led the field home in the AVellington Cup, and at the same ago ' tho Trentham Gold Cup. New Zoaland St. Leger and Great Northern St. Leger, both fell to him. Rapine’s four-year-old . career was again well tipped with brilliancy, for at that ago he won the Australian Jockey Club’s Autumn Stakes, Cumberland Stakes and A.J.C. Plate. It was c.eemed expedient to give Rapine a rest at five-years-old, and he was completely off the scene last season. Ho has so far contested ten races this season, the Alotropolitan Handicap at Riccarton and the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie standing out as two important victories to his credit. The following are the leading lines in tho pedigree of the Auckland Cup winner: Sire: Alartian, by Martagon (son of Bend Or and grandson of Doncaster) from Otterden, by Sheen (son of Hampton) from Springmorn, by Springfield (son of St. Albans).Dam: Pineta, by Spearmint (son of Carmine and grandson of Alusket) from Pintado, by -Persimmon (son of St. Simon), from Guinea-Hen, by Gallinule (son of Isonomy). RAILWAY HANDICAP. Tho A.J.C. Railway Handicap was divided for the first time oil Saturday, and singularly enough Air G. F. Aloore won both divisions,, ono with Reremoana and the other with Lady Cavendish. Rercmoana showed what a good horse ho was last year when lie won the Thompson Handicap at Wellington and then came north to win the A.R.C. Easter Handicap and run second in the All Aged Stakes at Avondale (writes Whalebone in the Auckland Star). He started on cloven occasions for five wins and one second. This season ho won the Criterion Handicap at Riccarton from a good field, while he was third in the Jockey Club Handicap. Lady Cavendish was tho best two-year-old in the Dominion last year, winning the Wellesley Stakes, the C.J.C. Irweli Handicap, tho Wellington Stakes, Jackson Stakes, Alanawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and Great Northern Champagno Stakes. This season she won tho Electric Plato at Riccarton, while sho has been placed on other occasions. She won well on Saturday and showed all the brilliancy she displayed last year.

RACE FOR FOAL STAKES. Tho field for tho Great Northern Foal Stakes at Auckland on Saturday was reduced to half-a-dozen by the withdrawal of Seatown and Tea Bell, but with that much discussed pair, Commendation and Lysander, saddled up for the test over six furlongs a very keen interest was manifested in the issue. Tho two leading youngsters stripped in fino form, and prior to speculation opening it seemed to be a popular opinion that it would be a close thing in tho matter of favouritism between them. However, the support accorded Commendation proved of ,so solid a character that he ruled a strong favourite. In the preliminary gallops Lysander pleased most, but the long loping action of Commendation was.also impressive. Royal Tea, who handled himself very freely, was selected as the most promising one to make a race of it with the two favourites. When the lino up at the post was ordered Joy King (third out from the rails) and Commendation proved very restive, and the latter, who was on the extrmo outside was repeatedly rearing. After a tiresome delay the barrier at length went up, and then came a denouncement that brought a frown to many a previously happy face. Commendation failed to jump off, and those who assisted so greatly to send him out favourite were confronted with the searching fact thlvt they had lost "their money without getting a run. With Commendation out of the race the contest was of course robbed of a deal of interest; but it took Lysander so long to dispose of Royal Tea that this served in some measure to tone down tho disappointment felt at tho unhappy incident, which so completely extinguished the elianco of tho favourite. Insido the distance Royal Tea was still with Lysander, and for a few strides it seemed as though the Auckland colti would gtet the best of his Wanganui rival, but when the whip was drawn to Lysander he answered very gamely, and ho won his race in good stylo at the end. The victory registered by Lysander marked the sixth ocasion during the past seven years that a descendant of Absurd has led tho field home in the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, and is the fifth occasion on which Air G. AI. Currio has bred the winner at the Koatanui Estate. It must have been a great disappointment to Air AY. H. Gaisford to see Commendation left at the post, but (says the Herald) he accepted the situation with admirable composure, and as J. Barry dismouned in tho birdcage, the owner of Commendation quietly remarked, “Hard luck, Jack.” .. AUCKLAND HANDICAPS.

The much-boomed Otago mare, Miss Winkie, has been eased up, and she is not likely to fulfil any of her immediate engagements. A. Pringle made his reappearance in the saddle at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, after a long absenco. Haze showed up for a while in the Auckland Cup, but eventually drifted back to last place, and was among the last to finish. A contingency lias been registered between Mr A. J. Toxward and Mr A. B. Williams with regard to Star Stranger’s yearling brother (Martian— Star Lady). It covers the period till tho end of his four-year-old season. J. M. Canjeron arrived in the Dominion from Sydney a few days ago on a holiday trip to his homo in Hawke’s Bay. He 'was anxious to race Tho Hawk during his stay, but transport arrangements could not bo made, and the Martian gelding was left in Sydney. Mr J. S. Barrett (says a southern ! scribe) seems fated to fail in big cup contests. Ho has had exasperating luck in the New Zealand Cup, in which Foo Chow and Dame Straitlace filled second place in successive years, with Count Cavour third in the liist contest. His record of bad luck was further added to on Saturday, when Count Cavour lost the Auckland Cup by a head to Rapine. >■ Two accidents occurred in the Boxing Day Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday.
