“MR CHAIRMAN” AT 102.

A HALE CENTENARIAN. Presiding over a meeting at Enfield recently was Mr Joseph Carben Weld, who is in his 103rd year. The meeting, which was the annual one of Enfield Independent Permanent Building Society, lasted three-quarters of an hour. When he went to live in Enfield 45 years ago Mr Weld was given but a fortnight to live, .yet ho still takes a daily walk, has a w skin almost bare of wrinkles, and reads a newspaper without glasses. But even earlier in life, Mr Weld was “near to death.” As a young man he fell into the Thames at Chiswick ; he sunk three times and remembered, while on the mud at the bottom of the river, making a great effort that brought him a fourth time to the surface, when he was rescued.
