EMPIRE PRESS TOUR.
IMPRESSIONS OF AUSTRALIA,
VIEWS OF A DELEGATE,
LONDON, Dec. 28. Sir William Davies, writing in the Sunday Times of his impressions of the Empire press tour, says: “Politically Australia offered the most interesting feature. The delegates were able to study an experiment from which the people of the United Kingdom may derive profitable guidance should Labour become an effective power.” Sir William oomments on the fact that Mr Bruce is head of a Conservative F'oderal Government, while five out of the six States are dominated by Labour. He commends the steady development of the Commonwealth on Labour lines, instancing the Arbitration Boards and so forth, and'proceeds: “Wherever the State trades in Australia or elsewhere the story is one of incredible waste and extravagance.” Sir William prophesies that Australia will inevitably suffer in the process of growth. It is impossible to resist tlve conclusion that the Labour Party will presently be the chief impediment to immigration. Regarding a White Australia, he is of opinion that it is a magnificent ideal, but Australians must sooner or later face the necessity of admitting a certain proportion of indentured coloured labour. —A. and N.Z. cable.
