GUY FAWKES’ REVIVAL.
MORE BONFIRES THAN USUAL,
Many more village bonfires than have been seen on any other November 5, in the last 20 years, helped to celebrate the 320th anniversary of the discovery of the “Gunpowder Treason Plot,” in England this year. More than a hundred villages procured fireworks for displays in which all the villagers took part. Great bonfires lighted up the surrounding districts, and into their fiery hearts numberless guys were thrown.
In several places bonfires were lit for the first time for many years. After a lapse of 15 years Lingfield, Surrey, had a costume scene round a great fire with historical figures committing effigies to the flames. Hundreds of pounds were spent on this celebration in the hope that it would yield a big sum for lieigate Cottage Hospital. At Lewes, Sussex, the Cliffe Bonfire Society aranged processions, a bonfire and tableaux in aid of St. Dunstan’s Hostel for the Blind. At Bridgewater, Somerset, thero were celebrations on the same scale, and scores of charities benefitted through “bonfire night.” In preparation for a huge bonfire on Chislehurst Common, Kent, the Common Rangers built a 20ft. stack of furze and other material.
