BRIGHT BATTING. NEW ZEALANDERS AT ADELAIDE. LOWRY MAKES A CENTURY. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) . - ADELAIDE, Dec. 28. New Zealand had 20 runs up when Blunt and Worker resumed to tho bowling of Palmer and A. Richardson in the cricket match with South AusThe weather was perfect and the wicket fast. The attendance was poor. The batsmen opened cautiously, scoring slowly. Grimmett immediately on relieving Palmer had Workor in difficulties, ultimately taking a catch off his own bowling. Worker took 51 minutes to make 14. With Blunt and Allcott batting, dull play ensued. 50 boing reached in 71 minutes. McKay’s first oVer saw tho dismissal of Allcott, tho bowler taking an easy catch close up to the wicket. Oliver quickly rattled up 22, when Grimmott brilliantly held a hot return. Tho visitors had lost three wickets for 85. Blunt was twice dropped when in tho forties, both being hard chances. He reached 50 in 117 minutes. Dacro opened out, and tho scoring was accelerated. Grimmett was punished severely, and tho third 50 was raised in 17 minutes. At 65 Blunt lost his wickot. He jumped out to Grimmett, and his bails were smartly removed by the wicketkeeper. Blunt batted well, taking 133 minutes to get his runs, hitting seven fours. Dacre was more vigorous, and hit the bowling all over tho field. Ho was particularly effective on the leg, and made 77 in 69 minutes, hitting ten 4’s and two 6’s. Play was much brighter after through the efforts of Dacre and Lowry, who shaped forcefully. The latter took 46 minutes to get 50. He was very strong on the on side, and got 17 off Grimmett in one over, reaching his century in 81 minutes. Lowry was dismissed when 123, made in 95 minutes. He gave a brilliant exhibition of hard hitting and hit twenty-two 4’s. With his dismissal the end was in sight. A Richardson came in and dismissed the remaining four batsmen in two overs, finishing with the average of four wickets for 41. New Zealand had done well, making a total of only 12 short of the local score.

An hour was left for play when Parry and A. Richardson opened tho second innings. Both batsmen played safe but vigorous cricket, taking advantage of every opportunity to got runs. Fifty came up in 28 minutes. Parry, the smallest cricketer in South Australia, batted gracefully and made 50 in 51 minutes. Tho pair raised tho century in 58 .minutes. FIGHT FOR THE ASHES. ADVICE BY TATE. LONDON, Dec. 27. M. W. Tate, the Sussex and AllEngland cricketer, in an article in the Daily Express, says that the ashes will not be recaptured unless the team chosen is so blended that it will work together, not merely as an eleven containing tho best batsmen and the best bowlers. The captain must be a really strong leader and an excellent batsman and field at least, and if a good bowler so much the better. The captain must be given tho choice of both batsmen and bowlers, so that he may make a selection according to the pitch and weather. This has often been overlooked in the past, when it was wrongly assumed that a team which would be successful in brilliant weather on a hard, dry ground at Lord’s, would do equally well at Leeds on a dull day and on a soft wicket. It is also supremely important that

thoso picked should have tho utmost confidence in their companions. Australia, like Yorkshire, has been signally successful for several years, simply because tho players had thim mutual confidence. This spirit of implicit, confidence is half the battle if a lest team produces it like Australian and Yorkshire elevens. The Yorksliireman who last summer declared that his county team was as likely as any to boat tho Australians was not overboastful, but merely enunciated wliat is a truth, and apparent to most of those who play in important games A. and N.Z. cable,

TOWN v. COUNTRY

COUNTRY TEAM’S GOOD SCORE

Per Press Association

WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. Tho Town v. Country cricket match attracted a fair number of spectators. H. Lambert, the visiting captain, won tho toss and elected to bat on a good wicket. The innings was characterised by solidness, although E. 11. Bernau and Lambert played with dash. The Town fielding was not up to a high standard. The high score of tho Country sido was due in great measure to this, and to the fact that many catches wero dropped, while their groundwork on several occasions was slovenly. Badcock bore the brunt of tho attack and camo out with tho best average, but had Lambert had more support from the field he would have had what he deserved —a much better average. Bernau’s innings was sensational. He lifted tho ball right over the ground into the street on three occasions.

Gallichan when he had made two. Hiddleston mado a good stand and scored 23 beforo he was run out. Tattersall, 22, was still at the wickets when play terminated, tho total for three wickets being 57.
