STABBED TO THE HEART.

CONSTABLE KILLED. MELBOURNE, Dec. 26. Constable Clare, the victim of the stabbing incident after an argument between constables and a number of men in the street, was stabbed to the heart in front of crowds of Christina,' shoppers. Constable Clare was of duty and in plafh clothes. He mel two plain clothes men and saw. a number of Italians quarrelling. As Constable Clare passed one of the Italians bumped into him and before he could defend himself lie was knocked down. While he was on the ground several Italians struck him. Other police came to his assistance and a largo s crowd gathered, but did not help the police. While Constable Clare was on the ground an Italian was seen to draw a knife and stab the constable in the heart.

Police and civilians chased the murderer, who only stopped after a revolver shot had been fired at him. Constable Clare was dead on arrival at the hospital.—Press Association.
