MANAWATU CUP

WON BY CLARINDA. AN EXCITING FINISH. The Manawatu Cup, the chief event of the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni this afternoon, went to Mr R. A. McKenzie’s Clarinda, which won after an exciting finish from Enthusiasm and Ngata. Air McKenzie, who is a well-known local owner, won the Cup last year with Clandhu. Kiliniss and Musical declined their engagements in the Tararua Hack Welter, the good field of 16 horses going to the post. Ardfinnan, Mangatoetoe, Salamis, Novar mid Monday were the first to show out from an excellent despatch. Running around the back the order was unchanged save that Asleep and Sanctuary had joined the leaders. Racing into the straight Mangatoetoe, and Finnan and Polar were in line ahead of Sanctuary and Asleep, but in the run to the post Opa came through anil went on to win by a neck from Newbury King who came very fast over the last bit and cut Kilburn out of second money. There were no scratcliings for the Cup, for which Ngata was favourite with Enthusiasm and Clarinda next in demand. On the release of the tapes Tresham was the first to show out, followed by Tanadees and Enthusiasm. Agitato immediately went to the front but ran wide when negotiating the bend into the straight. He soon again had the lead. Olympic, Ngata, Tresham and Scotch Alixture being next. However, he again ran wide and tvent to the rear, leaving Ngata in the lead from Waetea, Olympic and Enthusiasm. Waetea and Ngata were the first to enter the straight but the field was well bunched. Clarinda then came through on the rails, and in a great race to the post headed Enthusiasm and Ngata, winning by the barest of margins, a half length separating second and third horses.
