The mystery of the assailant of Arthur Burrows, a bank clerk, who died as a result of an assault in Spring street on October 26, was not cleared' up at the inquest to-day, and the coroner, Mr Berriman, recorded a finding of manslaughter against an unknown attacker.

Detectives Brophy and Saker stated that exhaustive inquiries had failed to find either the assailant or the woman who was with Burrows at the time of the assault.

Frank Cargill Haleman, of Fitzroy, said that ho witnessed the assault. Ho saw Burrows, another man, and a woman crossing the road. The other man struck Burrows a violent blow on the mouth, and Burrows fell heavily on the back of his head. Burrows was carried by witness and others to the ramp of Federal Parliament House, and, when Burrows opened his eyes, his assailant said: “If I catch you with her again I will wipe the street with your brains. If you will marry her I will divorce her.” Mrs Liiy Silverman said she did not know a woman answering to the description of the ono seen with Burrows. Burrow's had been co-respondent in a divorce suit brought by Dr Isaac Silverman against her, which had been dismissed.

Victor Nankervis, garage proprietor, at Fitzroy, and Charles Mackenzie, electrician, said that the woman with Burrow's at the time of the assault was not Mrs Silverman.
