BLAZE AT MATATA
BUSINESS BLOCK DESTROYED. Per Press Association. WHAICATANE, Dec. 24. A fire at Matata early this 'morning destroyed a wooden business block in the main street. The property and stock are valued at about £6500. The affected premises are: Mrs Lees, store and dwelling, insurance £1600; hotel and storeroom, insurance £850; Mayo’s fancy good store, insurance unknown; and Miss Starger’s confectionery shop, which was insured. A bucket brigade did good work and saved the hotel building, only fifteen feet from the burned storeroom. The hotel block is owned by W. Montgomery, and Mrs Lees’s store by Burt Bros., of Matata.
