DEMAND FOR “SMOKO.”
CYCLE WORKERS’ DISPUTE. AN EMPHATIC"OBJECTION. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 6. “They will be wanting to eat their dinner during working hours next,” commented Mr C. Bell at a conciliation council to-day to discuss the cycle workers’ dispute. He was referring to the union’s demand that in every four hours on© quarter of an hour should be allowed for “smoko,” or that smoking should be permitted during working hours. The commissioner: Is it not usual to have a cigarette during working hours ? Mr Bell: Never on your life. They will be wanting to eat their dinner during working hours next. It was pointed out by the employers that benzine tins were o]sen in the workshops and smoking would be dangerous. The clause was not agreed to.
