MOVIE WAR.
IS MONOPOLY SOUGHT? AMERICAN ALLEGATIONS. NEW YORK, Oct. 28, Sections of the moving picture business contend that the ownership of theatres by producers and distributors induces unfair competition, and that Adolph Zukor, through the Famous Players, Lasky Corporation, dominates the American and foreign picture industry. They will put their views before a Trade Commission, which is to sit on November 24. It is alleged that oppressive measures have been used to eliminate independent theatre ownership by the forced presentation of poor pictures, and that there have been conspiracies to restrain the free sale of pictures. It is declared that 10,000,000 dollers (£2,000,000) have been spent to buy theatres in “key” cities, that the prices of admission have been increased from 5 and 10 cents, to over a dollar, and that exhibitors’ rentals have been increased by 375 per cent, since 1916. Adolph Zukor gives a general denial to the allegations.
