SPORTS CLUB’S REPORT.

A SATISFACTORY SEASON

The report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Mnnawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, in reviewing the past season, says that, tuking into consideration the upsetting influence of the infantile paralysis epidemic, it had been very successful from a competitions point of view. Six evening meetings had been conducted and had been well supported by members, while the general public had also displayed a fair amount of interest. An afternoon meeting had been held on April 4, when athletics from all parts of the Wellington district had been present. The events had been well contested and some very fine finishes recorded, which reflected great credit on the club’s handicapper, Sir T. Stubbs. Financially, the season had not been the best, the epidemic having seriously interfered with the attendance at the afternoon meeting, involving tho club in a loss of approximately £36, and, on the year’s working a deficiency of about £l2. Tho epidemic had also prevented the holding of the school championship events for tho Nathan Cup. The cup presented for the most points gained at evening meetings in running and field events had been won by A. Weston with 25 points, M. Comber being second with 17 points. The Boomerang Cup for cycling had been secured by N. Dixon with 10 points, G.' Cooksley filling the position of runner-up with nine points. At the afternoon meeting, the Bunkers’ Cup had been won by Kelly, of the Feilding Club, lie gaining the most points in running, while G. Cooksley had secured the Cooper Cup in the cycling section. The country clubs’ championships had been held at Levin, the local club having been strongly represented, F. A. Dalziell gaining championship honours in the mile walk and M. Strange in the 440 yards championship. A number of other members had annexed honours in the handicap events. Regret was expressed at tho demise of Mr S. R. Lancaster, who had always been ready and willing to assist the club, while a loss to the active ranks had been incurred by the removal from this centre of Mr J. Norris, who, during his term of office as secretary, had given of his best in the interests of the club. During the season, events open to members of the Ladies’ Club were included in the evening programme, and it is hoped that the incoming season will witness a marked increase in the active members in their ranks.
