Hons. D. H. Guthrie and It. F. Bollard were passengers to Wellington by the Main Trunk express this morning.

After a six months’ tour abroad, Mr E. Page, S.M., has returned to Wellington to tako *up magisterial duties on the Bench again. A cablegram from London states that Sir Ernest Rutherford, who is at present in New Zealand, lias been nominated for the presidency of the Royal Society. The Parish Magazine states that Mr Hector Kenny, who will be ordained in Wellington this month, will join the staff of All Saints’ parish early next month.

Mr A. Dawson, chief postmaster at Palmerston North, is at present on annual leave. Mr A. Shelton, of the G.P.0., Wellington, is acting as relieving chief y postmaster. ■ Mr F. Doidge, a former New Zealand pressman, has been appointed to the directorate of the London Daily Express, states a Press Association cable message. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch announces the death of Colonel Ralph Anderson Chaffey, aged 69, commander of the Canterbury military district from 1914 to 1919, and a well-known sheep farmer.

Messrs J. Knight, D. Buchanan, R. D. Knight and W. T. Penny purpose attending the Royal Show at Christchurch. Messrs J. Knight and Buchanan have already left for the south, while Mr R. D. Knight proceeds today and Mr Penny to-morrow.

Mr Frodie, late of Wellington, has been appointed manager at Te Puke for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. in succession to Air G. t W. Brown, who was recently appointed manager at Palmerston North.

The Director-General of Health (Dr. T. H. A. Valintine) leaves Wellington to-day upon a tour of the South Island, during which he will confer with hospital boards upon questions of policy and administration. Mr J. A. Kortegast, brother of Mr J. J*. Kortegast, of the local post office staff, has arrived in Palmerston North from San Francisco, California, where he has been a resident for fifteen years. Sir Kortegast proceeds from here to Dunedin to attend the opening of the exhibition. Rev. W. W. Cutchen, who has been vicar of Tauranga for the last four years but has had to resign recently through ill-health, left with is family last week for Napier, where he intends engaging in farming pursuits until he recovers good health. The death occurred a few dayg ago at Christchurch of Mr Charles Percy Cox, late of Mount Somers, at the age of 91. He was one of New Zealand’s early settlers, having arrived in the colony in 1853. He was for many years engaged in farming operations on a large scale in the Canterbury province.

Hon. William Pember Reeves, who was formerly a member of Mr Seddon’s Cabinet, and afterwards High Commissioner for- New Zealand in London, was due to arrive at Auckland to-day by the Niagara on a visit to the Dominion. He is accompanied by Mrs Reeves and her sister, Mrs Lascelles.

Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, relieving Magistrate, arrived in New Plymouth on' Friday to relieve Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., who has returned to Auckland. Mr Hewitt will remain in Taranaki for a‘week, when Mr C.- R. Orr-Walker, S.M., of Wellington, will temporarily take over the duties of the Magistrate in that district.

At the annual Synod of the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu district of the Alethodist Church of New Zealand, which will open its sessions at Dannevirke this week, Revs. H. T. Peat and J. Oliver and Messrs T. R. Hodder, A. H. Fisher and AV. Eggleton will represent Cuba Street Church, while Revs. M. A. Rugby Pratt and Green Hall, Sister May and Messrs G. H. Stiles, H. 15. Pacey and Gordon Bennett will represent Broad Street. Rev. Rugby Pratt will preside over the Synod.
