RESISTING ARREST
OFFENDER S'ENT TO PRISON. “POLICE MUST BE PROTECTED.” AUCKLAND, Nov. 4. “The police aro our bulwarks between freedom and lawlessness, and they must be protected,” said Mr E. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Pol ice Court in sentencing Cecil Mark Brown, aged 37, to 14 days’ imprisonment for resisting Constable Tucker iji the execution of his duty. Accused was also fined £1 for assaulting Robert Stewart Wylie. After being arrested accused was released on bail, and when his name was tailed in court lie did not appear. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said the assault was serious, and there was no excuse for accused’s non-appearance. The magistrate issued' a warrant for Brown’s arrest, and the case was adjourned. Later in the morning Brown appeared voluntarily, and pleaded guilty. The, senior-sergeant- said that at about G. 40 p.m. on Saturday accused went to a hoarding house in lvarangahape road and struck Wylie in the face while he was having a meal. A constable was sent for, and when lie arrived accused again struck Wylie. Accused struggled violently when tho constable attempted to arrest him and another constable had to bo called in. With the assistance of a naval man they managed to handcuff him. Accused’s employer put in a plea to have him fined. l ‘l am not going to have policemen assaulted, and I am not going to impose a fine in a case of this kind,” said the magistrate. “The only wav to stop assaults of this kind is imprisonment.”
