PEOPLE’S DAY

MANAWATU SPRING SHOW. LARGE ATTENDANCE OF PUBLIC The very large number of motor cars parked this morning along Cuba and adjacent streets indicated that the country people wero going to mako “People’s Day” at the Manawatii and West Coast A. and P. Association’s Spring Show quite as successful as in previous years. It was feared that 1 the boisterous weather early this- morning might deter many from making the journey into town, but apparently it had little effect upon the last dqy’s attendance. Early this afternoon tho townspeople also began to arrive in considerable numbers, and when the grand parade commenced the oval fence and stand were l acked with interested spectators. The industrial halls, and in particular tho wonderfully largo and representative motor exhibit, were patronised to such an extent that the accommodation was fully taxed. A largo measure of interest, too, was displayed in the stock entries, while the horse competitions attracted a great number to the oval.

Displayed in glass showcases in 'ho arts and home industries hall are the association’s trophies, comprising in all over 50 magnificent pieces of silver, the cumulative value of which must be an imposing figure. Most striking, of course, is the Wilber Remembrance Trophy, a colossal cup valued at about £350. Others include the Conway Challenge Cup for most points in horses, cattle, sheep and pms; Blundell Bros.’ for Shorthorns; Cue Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., cup for butter classes at the National Dairy Show ; tho Clement Cup for dairy classes; the McHardy Perpetual Memorial Cup for most yoints in ring events at the Spring Show; the E. Short Romney Marsh Cup and the magnificent Wheeler Memorial Challenge Shield for competition by Romney Marsh breeders. The least of them would do any society honour and the display lias attracted quite a largo measure of attention.

Yesterday’s gate receipts were £4G9 6s as compared with £736 6s Gd for the second day of the ]924 t (Royal Show) fixture, and £3lB 18s for the 1923 show second day—a not unfavourable comparison.

FINE SHOW OF CLYDESDALES.

Commenting upon the Clydesdales exhibited, the judge, Mr It. Lockhead, of Balciutha, who is officiating for tho first time at the Manawatu fixture, said that, although not very numerous, they would compare favourably, as a class, with any of the leading South Island shows. There wore some particularly fino geldings, tho like of which, ho stated, was not often seen in a show ring. Mr Lockhead made particular mention of tho work of the stewards,., which, he said, left nothing to be desired. The breed in his opinion was still holding its own in public favour, hub ho advised breeders not to neglect, weight in seeking after quality.

TROTTING EXHIBITION. The horso events to-day were watched by a large number of spectators, considerable interest being evinced therein. Early in the afternoon a trotting exhibition was given by J. Clark’s (Kairanga)' Audubon Patch and G. Craw’s (Linton) Loch Moigli, two splendid types of this class of horse, tho public thoroughly appreciating tho display.
