SPRING SHOW

JUDGING DAY. AFTERNOON ATTENDANCE I,AHGE. The Spring Show was liberally patronised yesterday afternoon. The competitions in the oval during the afternoon wore the premier attraction and wore watched by a crowd of considerable dimensions who thoroughly appreciated the trotting display and the leaping and hunters’ jumping. JUDGES’ COMMENTS. SHEEP. SOUTHDOWNS. The Southdown judge, Mr A. H. Bowen, of Toko, said that every class had been well filled and competition had been closo throughout. There were several outstanding two-tooth ewe hoggets. ROMNEYS. Mr F. It. Seddon, of Hamilton, judge of the Romney Marsh natural condition classes, said that the sheep penned were excellent, both as regards numbers and quality. In fact, had it not been for the big entry in this section there would have been few snoop at the show. It had been very difficult to place the winners in the various classes. He had had his doubts in one or two instances as to whether some of the sheep penned were in the natural condition or not, but had given the exhibitors the benefit of the doubt. It was his suggestion that the association should appoint a committee to inspect the sheep before being judged in future, in order to make sure that the sheep were in the natural condition. CATTLE. JERSEYS. 'j Commenting on the Jersey section, the judge, Mr A. A. Ward, of Miro, said that entries were hardly up to the usual, but competition was good with the exception of the classes for three-year-old bulls and cows. The winning matured cow, which had also corried off the championship, was an outstanding animal, both as regards show type and milking. The three-year-old bull that had won the male championship would make a name for itself in the future. It was one of the cleanest and most honestly made bulls that he had seen for a long time. He could also predict a great future for the winning yearling bull. Maori Boy, the Royal Show champion, was now ten years of age, and in the aged class could only secure second place.

FRIESIANS. Mr H. Jolly, of Waiuku, the judge in the Friesian section, stated that the team which had won the Wilber Cup competition was an outstanding collection of animals and, considering the distance that they had to travel, they were in first-class condition. It would be hard to find a team to beat them anywhere. Competition throughout the section had been very close, and ho had had difficulty in making his awards. The Royal Show had not affected the entries very much, for several teams that would not have otherwise taken the ring here had competed on their way down to Christchurch. The cow championship was given to an animal of great type. COMPETITIONS. Leaping competition for ponies, 13.2 hands and under, to be ridden by boys or girls under 14 years: H. M. ANNUAL SHOW FINE EXHIBITION OF DOGS. The Manawatu Kennel Club’s show opened at the Showgrounds yesterday, and throughout the day tile hall in which the animals were housed was well patronised by fanciers and the public generally. Entries were well up td those of previous years, and, 111 illl, 180 dogs Wefe on exhibition. The standard \\ as exceptionally high and competition Was very close, Particularly even were the setters, collies and fox terriers. Tho limitation ot the classes this year did not materially affect the number of dogs on show. The exhibitors and judges were entertained at morning and afternoon tea by a committee of ladies tinder Mrs W. Purton, this action being milch appreciated. The judges of the various sections were: Setters, bulldogs, rough-coated cdllies and all terriers. Mr S. Johnson, Palmerston North. All toys, retrievers, pointers, EsqttL maux, whippets and greyhounds, Mr W. Clarke, Wellington. Working sheep dogs, harriers, Mr R. J. McDonald, Dannevirke. Cocker spaniels and springers, Mr It. L. C. Aitchison, Palmerston North. JUDGES' COMMENTS. HARRIERS AND WORniNG SHEEP DOGS.

Commenting on the harriers and the Working sheep dogs, tile judge, Mr R. J. McDonald, of Dannevirke, said that there had been nothing very outstanding among the former classes with tile exception of one old dog that, despite its years, possessed more quality and type for colonial purposes than any other of the animals exhibited. In the working dog classes there had not been a strong entry. Tho winning boarded collie was one of the best types, while another animal of high quality was a young smoothcoated slut which, for its years, was one of the best that lie had yet judged in the Dominion.

COCKER SPANIELS AND SPRINGERS.

The judge of cocker spaniels and springers, Mr K. L. C. Aitchison, said that numerically the first-named section was the strongest in the dog show. Tito quality throughout was well above standard, and some particularly fine specimens were on exhibition, notably G. Tajlor’s blue roan dog Warwick Bang, which was the best cocker spaYiiel and also the best sporting dog in tile show. It had also been rumier-up to Mrs S. Johnson's Pomeranian Fluffy Chick of Sunlight (imp.) for the best dog in the show. N. A. Pressing's Ongaruo Billy and Mrs W. Puring in the black and it had taken him considerable time to finally decide which was the better. In the coloured hitches Mrs Purton’s ch. 111v’ermay Tiki and J. W.. Robson’s Guess of Stoke stood out from the others. In the class for springers W. H. Skinner’s Mac was outstanding; it was a dog that would win at any show. Against all sporting breeds, this animal had taken second place in the working gun dog class. MISCELLANEOUS CLASSES. Mr W. Clarke, of Wellington, judge of all toys, retrievers, pointers, Esquimaux, whippets and greyhounds, said that the quality of the Pomeranians was only fair, with the exception of two exhibits which came from outside Palmerston North and Mrs S. Johnson’s bitch, which not only won its class hut also secured the honour of being the best dog in the whole show. There were, one or two fair specimens of retrievers and greyhounds. The pointer exhibited by Messrs Andrews and Weir and classified as the best game dog, was an animal of exceptional merit. In conclusion, he wished to congratulate the Kennel Club oil the way it had managed its section. Details of the prize fist are as follow : HARRIERS.
