SCENE OF DESOLATION.
BURSTING OF WELSH POWER DAM. A NIGHT OF HORROR. LONDON, Nov. 5. Details of the Lake Dolgarrog disaster, caused by the North Wales Power Company’s dam bursting, show that the night was one of unprecedented horror. The whole valley was overwhelmed by a raging torrent from the lake, 1400 feet above sea level, which swept down a mountain-side 50 feet high with tremendous noise. Many homes were along its path. Parents grabbed their children from their beds and fled to safoty. When morning came the valley was strewn with wreckage. Houses, furniture, carcases of animals and large quantities of wreckage were swept along by the river Conway to the sea 6ix lhiles away. Regarding the previous report that a woman and nine children were drowned, five of the children are safe. The body of one child was found floating on a mattress eight miles from the scene of the disaster. The latest estimate Is that thirteen perished. Rescuers frequently waded up to their necks to save those struggling in the torrent, and their selfsacrifice alone prevented a vastly greater roll. The valley is still a shocking scene of desolation. —A. and N.Z. cable.
