AMERICAN ELECTIONS.

CONTESTS OF ALL KINDS. NEw’yORK, Nov. 1. Tuesday ' will he election clay throughout the nation, when many officials, from city mayors to State governors and federal congressmen, will ho elected and by State referendums the people will decide upon the expenditure of many hundreds of millions of dollars for various public improvements. Peculiar interest attaches to contests in several places either because ot old and bitter issues revived or the extraordinarily large outlays involved for peculiarly necessary State undertakings. Detroit has lived through a stirring campaign. The Mayor, Air John Smith, in canvassing for re-election, has advanced as the chief issue __ relentless opposition to the Ku Ivlux Khui, while Air John Bowles, his opponent, lias refused to accept the issue, declaring that lie is neither for nor against the Klan. This contest has interested Air Henry Ford, who has issued a statement denouncing organisations which are directly or indirectly undermining any church, and has declared that he will support Air Smith, who is a Roman Catholic. In New Jersey Mr Arthur Whitney, a Republican, opposes Mr Harry Aleert, a Democrat, for the governorship. The-latter’s party has kept the prohibition issue to the forefront and declare that in this State, which is a great ‘‘wot” stronghold, the anti-pro-hibition cry usually brings victory. They quote the instance of Governor Edwards, who said lie wanted to stie New Jersey as “wet” as the Atlantic Ocean and was elected by a large majority. New York city will sec the traditional battle between Tammany Hall and the combined opposition forces in the present mayoral contest, involving Air James Walker, a Democrat and Tammany Hall’s nominee, arid Air Frank Waterman, a famous manufacturer and nil 'lndependent Republican. The fortunes of Governor Smith, who played such a prominent part in the last Democratic-National Convention, are involved in Air AYalker’s candidature, for which he is actively campaigning. while the ex-Seeretary of State, Mr Hughes, is campaigning for Mr Waterman. Mr Smith is also sponsoring the expenditure of 400 million dollars for rebuilding fire trap prisons, etc., and the elimination of dangerous railway crossings, which take an annual toll of hundreds of lives in motor accidents. Mr Hughes has greatly disconcerted the Republicans by supporting AllSmith in these expenditures. Two federal congressmen will be elected in New Jersey and Kentucky to fill extraordinary vacancies. A governor will also bo elected in Virginia, while State legislatures in Virginia, Kentucky, New Jersey and Mississippi will be chosen. These contests arc looked upon as valuable indications of the country’s trend for the important congressional election.—A. and N.Z. cable.
