CARNIVAL OPENS TO-MORROW. FURTHER RESULTS OF JUDGING. Tho opening of the fortieth annual spring carnival of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association to-morrow bids in every respect to be the auspicious commencement of a successful fixture. The industrial hall space was being extensively occupied this morning, while further side-show proprietors seeking accommodation on the grounds have had to be refused. Tho motor exhibit will he a sjiecial feature, while tho various competitive classes, as mentioned yesterday, will be representative and productive of keen competition. Although in tho stock divisions there are no shorthorn cattle or Leicester and merino- slice]) entered, Rylarids are unusually well represented, and most of the other classes are strong. J.'Watkins, of Wellington, judged classes in the art and technical schools sections. Commenting on the work, Air Watkins deplored the falling off of entries and, in some cases, the lowering of the standard of quality of the work. There was not nearly tho amount of competition which thero used to be, he said. In many respects, however, tho work was up to standard. He especially mentioned the entries of creditable exhibits by Woodford House School (Hawke’s Bay) and said that it was a pity tho local schools did not follow this example. Speaking of the display generally, he observed that the work in design maintained a high standard. ’The work from nature was carefully wrought and the sketches from life, especially those from Woodford House School, were deserving of commendation.
