THE CIVIL SERVICE

SALARIES QUESTION. RANK AND FILE NOT OVERLOOKED. PRIME AIINISTEIi’S STATEAIENT. The following statement has been issued by the Prime Minister: “My attention has been drawn to a circular issued by tho Labour Party,, in which it is stated that in my capacity as Postmaster-General 1 coi Id not recommend any adjustment of salary paid to officers of the rank and file throughout the Public Service, but that I have recently restore 1 the wages ‘cut’ to the administrative heads of the departments. t> “It is true that several heads ol departments were granted increases in salaries. These payments iiave no relation whatever to the ‘cuts,’ but were made in consequence of a revaluation of the positions in respect or the responsibility and importance qt the duties performed. Administrative olficers did not participate in the general regrading which took place last year. The toted amount, of tho increases granted to administrative heads is only £2900. “So far as the rank and file officers aro concerned, they were not overlooked by Government. Officers were regraded last year, and increases due to regrading and scale increments, totalling £381,000, were granted by Cover nment. “The Public Service Commissioner, tho chairman of the Railways Board and the secretary of the Post ana Telegraph Department advise me they are of opinion that the rates of salaries paid to the rank and filo of officers aro reasonable, and compare more than favourably with the rates of remuneration paid to similar grades of employees in outside avoc ilims.”
