MONTH’S SPEECH-MAKING.

FOUR OR FIVE MEETINGS A DAY. AUCKLAND, Nov. 2. After nearly a month of speech-mak-ing Mr Coates finds his voice rather the worse for wear. He began the campaign at Oamaru bn October 9, and since the nho has travelled from Invercargill to the Bay of Islands, delivering four or five speeches a day, indoors an out of doors, in all sorts of weather. “I seem to have a new voice every timo I make a speech,” ho told the construction workers in the camp at St. Helier’s to-day. ‘‘You would be surprised at tho number of recipes that have been offered me to improve it. I don’t care for the recipes. The only thing seems to be to go on until one can’t talk any more.” At Mangere the Prime Minister found a very Considerate chairman, Mr S. W. House, who told tho audienco that Mr Coates was having a very strenuous time, and that his speech would last only half an hour. ‘‘l do’nt know how many voices of mine have gone west in this campaign,” said Mr Coates, laughingly. ‘‘l don’t mind, but it is a bit of anuisancc when you have got a cold and the voico you ought to have gives way and you get another in its place. It means working under greater pressure than usual.” After half an hour tho chairman told Mr Coates that his time was up, but the Prime Minister, encouraged by demands from tho audience for more, continued a little longer, rcmnrkingt hat the only thing was to go on till he stopped. After a vote of thanks had been carried with loud cheers, lie made the audience laugh by asking the chairman’s leave before ho replied. This done, ho caused more laughter by moving a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman “for looking after mo so well this afternoon.”
