(From Our Own Correspondent.) A number of local tennis players and friends accepted tho invitation of the Mangaorc Tennis Club to be present at the opening of their courts on Saturday afternoon. Tho weather was all that could bo desired, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. After Mr Blackwood (president) lijid declared tho courts open for play and Mr Jilackwood had hit up tho first ball the arranging of games was left in tho hands of-Mr Ross Moody, and somo very evenly contested combined doubles were played till a late hour. Arrangements hud been made among the Mangaore residents to entertain the visitors to tea, and then to adjourn to the “bach" where a most enjoyatne social evening was provided. Shannon lolk who were present cannot speak highly enougli of the recep. tion they received from all sides. Over 50 couples were present at tho dunce, and a very jolly evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Bang Sync.” iluring tho evening songs were contributed by Mrs Bovis, Miss fiackett (Managoro), Mr Henry (Managaorc), Mr Cronquesc, Mr Bovis and Mr Mackoreth. A very amusing “stump speech” competition tor men was won by Mr Cronquest, and a “lucky spot” fox trot was won by Miss Colo. Accompaniments were played by Mcsdames Jones Bovis, and Robinson, while dance music was provided by Mrs Ross, Mrs Jones, Mr James, Mr B. Spencer, and a gramophone. Before dispersing Mr E. BcginiM afternoon tea on tho court and r at the “bach” wore provided by tlie indies and received full justice from all present. In sepaking at the Mangaorc “bach” social on Saturday evening Mr Johnson mentioned that the necessary clearing had been done and tho tirst sod turned towards a tonins court at the No. 3 dam and he suggested that on tho official opening day Shannon and Mangaoro clubs should combine in a picnic for that day. the party to arrive at No. 3 camp in time for lunch. In tho afternoon trout fishing, boating, bathing and tennis could be enjoyed, and after tea a dance could be held in the Y.M.C.A. hall. Tho suggestion aroused hearty applause. The monthly social gathering of tho local returned soldiers was held at Mr J. T. Boris’s residence on Friday night. Some 14 men turned up and a very pleasant lime was spent with cards, anecdotes and supper. Members of tho Shannon Choral Society journeyed to Moutoa last Wednesday to give aconcert programmo in aid of the Moutoa llall fund. They report only a fair audience at tho concert, although a good crowd was present at the dance. Nevertheless, members speak well of their reception and they had an enjoyable evening. It is the intention of tho society to hold a “wind up” concert in Shannon at an early dale, when they hope to receive a fair measure of support from tho public in order to place tho society on a sound financial footing in readiness j for a reopening next winter. Owing to tho recreation grounds not being in order early enough, the local cricket club has decided not to enter for tho competition this season. The following have been selected to represent Shannon in tho first round for the triangular bowling shield to be played at Foxton: Newton, Clayton, B. Spancer, E. Spencer (skip); 11. Butt, E. Butt, Jones, Bovis (skip).
