SUMMER SPORTS.

PLAY ON LABOUR DAY

Although weather conditions did not favour it over much, summer sport was indulged in on several' of the local club greens yesterday. At the Palmerston North 'Bowling Club a progressive pairs tournament, each match of five heads, was played, the winners being Messrs P. Morris (skip) and J. McGregor (lead). There was close competition amongst the leads, McGregor securing his win on a play-off. A croquet tournament arranged foi Takaro Club was abandoned owing to the coldness of the weather and in a euchre tournament which took the place of it Miss J. McFarlane won in the ladies’ section and Mr Hull in the gentlemen’s. The tennis section of the club proeeded with its programme, Miss A. Littlejohn winning in the ladies’ section, with Miss I. White run-ner-up. In the men’s division H. McDonald, of Longburn Club, annexed first honours, a club mate, R. Tanner, junr., being runner-up. At the Northern Club a progressive pairs bowling tournament was held, a tie between three pairs resulting after the scheduled number of rounds had been played. Robinson and Welch (skip) heat Kirk and Bryan (skip) in a semi-final, and it was arranged that on Thursday they will meet Mouldey and Thomley.

The pairs bowling contest at Terrace End Club was won by J. Davidson (6 wins) in the skips’ division, while in the leads’ section three tied for the first place with. 4 wins each —Wore, Kendall and Thirtle.
