FARMER IMMIGRANTS

FURTHER ASSISTANCE SOUGHT. : At the recent Dominion conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union the following remit was passed: “That in order to encourage immigration to settle the Crown lands of the Dominion, it is desirable that settlers’ furniture, household effects, and, farm implements should ho admitted duty free and that free railway transport and passenger fares on tho Government railways, to their destination, be provided.” Tho Under-Secretary for immigration, to whom tho matter was referred, has replied to the Dominion secretary of the Farmers’ Union stating that it is considered that the present “free list” as under is adequate for present requirements. “Passengers’ baggage and effects, including only wearing apparel anfl other personal effects that have been worn or are in use by persons arriving in New Zealand, also implements, instruments and tools of trade, occupation, or employment of such persons, not exceeding £IOO in value, and household or other effects, which have been in use for twelve months prior to embarkation by the persons or families bringing them to New Zealand, and which are not intended for any other person or persons or for sale, but exceeding value £IOO for each adult, and £SO for each child, tho total value lor one family not to exceed £3OO, provided that- any such goods must be imported within two years of the arrival in New Zealand of the persons or families by whom they have been used. Bicycles are admitted free if they have been in use for twelve months before embarkation.” The Under-Secretary adds that in the matter of free railway transport and passenger fares on Government railways, it is not deemed necessary to extend the provision already made whereby migrants are assisted to proceed to their destinations from ports of arrival.
