GORGE ROAD CONTROL.

MEETING OF. BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Gorge Road Board of Control was held this afternoon, when there were present: Messrs F. J. Nathan (in the chair), J. Batehelar, M. O. Grainger. R. S. Chadwick, D. Me Elroy and 11. Cornelius. ENGINEERS’ REPORT. The engineers, Messrs Jickell and Gilmour, presented the following report: During the month IX9 cubic yards of rock were excavated in road widening on hillside (day work), and 118 cubic yards in column foundations; 132 cubic yards of concrete were placed in position in 16 columns, and 369 lineal feet of slabs, beams, walls and kerb. Very bail weather conditions pre vailed, particularly during the second half of the month, and the progress of the work was hindered in consequences. Up to July 10 no less than 37 sliyiss had come down, varying in size from 10 to 2000 cubic yards, and totalling approximately 6000 cubic yards. The road was closed on four occasions in June owing to slips. Both Mr F. W. Furkert, engineer-in-chief, and Mr J. Hannah, district engineer to the Public Works Department, have inspected the Gorge road since last meeting.—Adopted. Accounts amounting to j 31172 10s 4d were passed for payment.
