A MANTLE OF SNOW

! COLERIDGE DUPLICATION. MEN TEMPORARILY DESERT. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. Lake Coleridge in the summer time is a beautiful place and in winter it presents a wonderful spectacle when the surrounding hill sides are covered with a thick mantle of snow. These are the impressions that the casual visitor from the city. carries back with him, but to the men working on the duplication of the hydro-electric power plan the snow has no attractions. To them it is decidely objectionable, as it impedes their work and makes the conditions most unpleasant. Recently, when the snow was particularly thick on the ground, a number of the men at Lake Coleridge tossed in their jobs and made tracks for the city. Just at that time things were looking rather blue. Food rationing had commenced and the prospects of obtaining new supplies from the city were"* not bright owing to the bad state of the roads. Happily the working conditions have now considerably improved, and it is stated that all the men who left on account of the snow are back on their jobs working cheerfully.

The threatened delay in the construction of the duplication work has thus been obviated, much to the satisfaction of those responsible for the supply of additional electricity next year.
